What in-roof means
The array sits within the roof plane, in a tray system that replaces the tile or slate underneath it, so the panels finish flush with the surrounding covering rather than standing proud.
When it makes sense
New builds, re-roofs, and properties where appearance genuinely matters — prominent frontages and conservation-sensitive streets. If the covering is coming off anyway, the extra cost of going in-roof is much smaller.
The catch
The weatherproofing detail carries the whole roof at that point, so workmanship matters more than on an on-roof system. Ventilation behind the panels also needs designing in, since a flush array runs warmer.
